One of the most important components of any roadway design is the improvement of passenger, driver, pedestrian, and worker safety. Outside of recent Federal Highway improvements, most of the existing roadways in the Taney County region are historically based routes which originated in completely different eras. Roads were built literally along old wagon routes or along established property lines without consideration of the alignment’s impact on vehicular or passenger safety. The steep slopes, sharp curves and rough surface conditions create numerous operational obstacles to uniform vehicular safety. This lack of modern design standards on older established routes is one of the key factors in Missouri’s low national ranking of rural roadway safety.
Rapid, accurate location of motor vehicle crashes combined with excellent post-crash emergency medical care is essential to reducing rural road deaths. With the current road network system, Emergency Responders are forced to travel long distances due to congested roadways to respond to accidents, fires, police calls, and medical emergencies. With the current roadways, no shoulders exist to allow adequate room for these emergency vehicles to maneuver around the traffic on the road slowing response times and creating a hazard for the other vehicles on the road.

Once the new Taney County Expressway is built with modern safety features incorporated into the design and construction, and the diverted passenger car and heavy vehicle traffic is using the new roadway, the accident rate for each road segment could be reduced by between 33% and 34%. Over the 20-year analysis period it is estimated that these improvements will eliminate 8 fatalities, 31 serious injuries, 182 minor injuries, and 475 property damage only accidents.
